The Lagos State Government has revoked allocations of housing units that have remained unoccupied for over two years.

These unoccupied units, located across several housing estates, have become a nuisance due to neglected maintenance, deteriorating premises, and other negative impacts.

The revocation directive was revealed by the Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, during a recent enforcement visit to the Lagos State Housing Estate in Sangotedo, Lekki, on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Akinderu-Fatai stated that Governor Sanwo-Olu ordered the revocation after finding evidence that many allocated units were left locked up, while the demand for housing continues to grow among prospective subscribers.

During the inspection, the Commissioner observed sealed blocks and flats, noting that the revocation applies regardless of whether the units were fully purchased or obtained under the Rent-To-Own scheme.

“Lagos State Government housing units are for those who truly need them, not for speculators,” he stated, emphasising that the administration’s efforts to boost the housing stock must prioritise genuine home seekers.

Akinderu-Fatai also questioned why Rent-To-Own units were left vacant, remarking, “Applying for a Rent-To-Own scheme suggests urgent need for housing, so why should these allocated flats be left unoccupied for two years?”

The Commissioner stressed that the government will not allow its housing infrastructure to fall into disrepair while many Lagosians remain in need of accommodation.

He confirmed that the Ministry of Housing will refund affected allottees and reallocate the units to those prepared to use them immediately.

Additionally, Akinderu-Fatai highlighted the rule outlined in all allocation letters, which stipulates that housing estate flats should be occupied within three months of allocation and key handover.

Shared estate facilities require contributions from all residents for proper upkeep.

In the past five years, the Sanwo-Olu administration has launched 21 housing estates, achieved through direct intervention and public-private partnerships, with infrastructure aimed at supporting decent living across the State.
