Wasiu Olowa, popularly known as Olowave, has spent the last three years building a catalogue from London that refuses to sound like any one thing. As it turns out, that is precisely the point.
There is a particular kind of producer ambition that is loud and unmistakable, announcing itself to the world with a “signature sound” so distinct that listeners can identify the beat before even hearing the artist. Wasiu Olowa, the Ogun State-born, London-based producer who releases under the alias Olowave, is not that kind of producer.
Instead, he has built an impressive and diverse discography over the past three years, with his greatest strength lying in his ability to disappear into the sound of the artist he is working with. He creates the architecture of a track without ever drawing unnecessary attention to himself as the producer.
Olowave began producing while working in radio. It was there that he first developed an understanding of music with clear sound and structure. Long before he ever sat in front of a digital audio workstation (DAW), he could already distinguish between a good mix and a bad one.
His experience in radio shaped the way he approaches music production, giving him a broadcaster’s ear for how sound is received by listeners. After relocating to London — one of the world’s major music capitals and a hub for the Nigerian diaspora — Olowave continued to produce music while connecting with artists across different parts of the world.
Many of the artists he collaborates with are based in Nigeria, while others are in the United Kingdom and beyond. Despite being based abroad, Olowave has not allowed geography to limit the type or scale of projects he can work on.
His production catalogue between 2023 and 2024 reflects a producer who refuses to be boxed into one style. He worked with DonllyG on three projects — Stay (Ma Lo), Folake, and Macaroni. These songs exist within the intimate, romantic, mid-tempo Afropop space for which DonllyG is known.
The producer also collaborated with Ofour2 on Ndidi and 2 Dollar, both released in December last year. Another project Olowave contributed to was Legxus by Logik Tha Pro, a body of work that explored an entirely different sonic direction while maintaining strong musical quality.
He also worked on Bishop by D3MY featuring Courag3, released in 2024. More recently, Olowave contributed to the Dan Baba Remix by Major X featuring Ngulde, released in October this year.
Taken together, Olowave’s production catalogue does not point to a producer obsessed with maintaining one identifiable sound. Rather, it reveals a producer with a broad musical ear and the technical ability to bring a wide range of sounds to life.
That does not mean he lacks identity as a producer. What remains consistent throughout Olowave’s work is the warmth of his harmonic choices and the sense of space embedded within his production style. More importantly, he appears to possess a deep respect for the artists he collaborates with and for the creative spaces they occupy.
Instead of imposing his sound on a record, he approaches each song by asking what it truly needs, then answers that question in the most creative and economical way possible. That approach has earned him the respect of artists across genres and at different stages of their careers.
As Olowave’s body of work continues to grow and become more refined, it is impossible not to notice his evolution — from releasing his own music to collaborating with talented artists from across the globe.
Three years into his production career, Olowave has more than proven his capabilities behind the boards. He is now looking beyond the confines of the Nigerian music ecosystem toward projects on a more global scale, all while continuing to showcase his creativity and versatility as a producer.
The only challenge he may face is visibility. Because his work is so deeply woven into the music itself, his contributions can sometimes go unnoticed. Yet, the quality of the catalogue he has built so far speaks volumes about the man behind the name.
For now, that is enough.
This piece is simply an introduction.
And the name is Wasiu Olowa — aka Olowave.
