The Lagos State Government has lauded the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Suit No. SC/1/2008, which reaffirms the constitutional authority of state governments to regulate lotteries and gaming activities within their jurisdictions.

The judgement nullifies the National Lottery Act, strengthening federalism and the autonomy of states.

In a statement on Sunday, Lagos Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, described the verdict as a historic triumph for the rule of law and constitutional democracy.

“The Supreme Court’s decision affirms that the regulation of lotteries and gaming is a residual matter, squarely within the purview of state governments,” Omotoso stated.

“This ruling reinforces the principles of true federalism, empowering states to chart their own regulatory frameworks.”

Omotoso further highlighted the judgement as a testament to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s enduring vision for true federalism, calling it “a fitting tribute to his progressive leadership and relentless pursuit of restructuring.”

He also praised former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, for his commitment to resolving contentious constitutional issues in court, noting that his efforts paved the way for this outcome.

Acknowledging Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s role, Omotoso commended his unwavering dedication to upholding the rule of law and defending the rights of Lagosians, which he described as pivotal to the legal victory.

Omotoso reaffirmed that the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) remains the sole regulatory body for gaming activities in the state. He urged illegal and unlicensed operators to regularise their operations with the authority or face prosecution.

“The Lagos State Government will continue to foster a conducive environment for legitimate businesses while protecting residents from the adverse effects of unregulated gaming,” he said, adding that the gaming sector is poised to contribute significantly to the state’s economic growth and the prosperity of its citizens.
