The Senate on Wednesday conducted a closed-door screening of the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Sen. Abdulaziz Yar’adua, noted during the session that the Senate had, on Tuesday, received President Bola Tinubu’s request for Oluyede’s confirmation as the Chief of Army Staff.

Yar’Adua extended condolences to Oluyede over the passing of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, acknowledging Lagbaja’s contributions to the Nigerian Army, including improvements in welfare and the establishment of the Nigerian Army Aviation.

“The nation is currently plagued by numerous security challenges requiring urgent and effective solutions,” Yar’Adua remarked.

He commended the courage and sacrifices of the Nigerian Army and other armed forces in combating insurgency and criminal activities, highlighting the ultimate sacrifice made by some personnel.

The screening, according to Yar’Adua, focused on Oluyede’s professional expertise, strategic vision, and capacity to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity and address security challenges.

“Your proposals on military funding and personnel welfare will be of great interest to this country,” Yar’adua added.

The screening aimed to assess Oluyede’s qualifications and readiness to lead the Nigerian Army in addressing the nation’s pressing security issues. (NAN)
