The Kogi State Government has called for a unified approach to tackle gender-based violence (GBV) across the nation.

Fatimah Momoh, the State’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, made the call in Lokoja on Tuesday, during a commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV.

The event, held under the theme “Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” served as a platform to rally stakeholders in the fight against this pervasive issue.

Represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary,  Audu Alami, Commissioner Momoh highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by GBV, stressing that it remains a gross violation of human rights with no place in society. She described the theme for the 2024 event as a powerful call to action, urging everyone to stand together against GBV, support survivors, and champion efforts to eradicate it.

“Today’s event is a celebration of our commitment to ending GBV, and to promoting a culture of respect, equality, and justice in our schools and communities,” Momoh stated. She called on participants to work collaboratively to foster a society that values and respects the rights and dignity of all individuals, irrespective of gender.

In her remarks, Titilayo Olorunrayetan, Director of Gender Affairs at the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, emphasized the importance of the programme as an opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding of GBV and its devastating effects. She expressed optimism that the event would empower participants to become ambassadors of positive change within their schools and communities.

The event featured a range of activities, including a quiz competition, debates, performances, and the establishment of a GBV club, all aimed at raising awareness and engaging the public. Many of the students who attended expressed that the event not only educated and entertained but also encouraged them to rethink their views on GBV and its impact on society.
