The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has emphasized the need for collective efforts to tackle corruption in African education systems.
She made this call during the second education summit organized by the Centre for General Nigerian Studies (CGNS) at LASU on Tuesday.
The summit, themed “Fostering Integrity and Peace: Tackling Corruption and Promoting Ethical Leadership in African Education”, underscored the importance of ethical leadership and integrity in shaping the continent’s educational future.
“There is no better time to discuss this theme than now. It is not only apt but also timely, relevant, and appropriate given the current situation in our society,” Olatunji-Bello said. She highlighted LASU’s strides in leveraging technology, including the GNS e-learning platform, to enhance learning and promote integrity in education.
The summit also addressed the ethical integration of artificial intelligence in education, with an emphasis on responsible adoption of emerging technologies.
The Director of CGNS, Prof. Mubashiru Mohammed, described the summit as a platform for young academics to present quality research, advancing their careers and enriching the CGNS journal. Mohammed praised the university’s GNS initiatives, which have been adopted for remote learning and examinations, garnering interest from other institutions like Alayande University.
Prof. Sylvester Fajonyomi, a Professor of Education Management, urged students and staff to uphold ethical practices, warning against corruption and academic misconduct such as begging for grades.
“We must respect the rules of the university because absence of credibility in institutions affects academics and society as a whole,” he said.
Committee Chairman, Prof. Simeon Dosunmu, called on education stakeholders to develop frameworks and partnerships that would position African education as a global model of integrity and innovation.
