The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, has commended Governor Seyi Makinde for commissioning the 11MW Hybrid Power Plant, describing it as a transformative step towards achieving energy sufficiency in the state.
Ogundoyin lauded the project, which combines a 10MW gas-fired power generation system with a 1MW solar PV solution, as evidence of Makinde’s visionary leadership.
The facility will supply reliable electricity to key infrastructure, including government offices, hospitals, schools, and economic hubs.
Speaking at the project’s commissioning at the State Secretariat in Ibadan, the Speaker stated: “This is another significant milestone in Governor Makinde’s efforts to address the challenges of inadequate power supply. The commissioning of this first phase of the Oyo State Power Project is a giant leap in energy sufficiency and a game-changer for our state. It demonstrates the Governor’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and economic growth.”
The project is expected to increase the state’s energy supply by 14%, enhancing public lighting, security, and economic activities within a 10km radius under the ‘Light-Up Oyo’ initiative.
It will also power critical facilities, such as Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital, State Hospital Ring Road, and Lekan Salami Sports Complex.
Implemented through a Build-Operate-Transfer model by Elektron Energy, the project positions Oyo State as a pioneer in energy innovation in Nigeria.
The Speaker expressed optimism that this development would attract investors and spur economic growth.
“This project will not only provide electricity but also create opportunities for businesses to thrive. It marks a critical step toward making Oyo State a hub for economic development. We are proud to support this initiative and grateful to Governor Makinde for his commitment to impactful projects that improve the lives of our citizens,” Ogundoyin added.
The Speaker reaffirmed the Assembly’s support for projects that enhance the state’s economy and living standards, describing the Hybrid Power Plant as a blueprint for sustainable development in Nigeria.
