A former presidential spokesman, Reno Omokri, has called on Nigerian artistes and actors to step up in support of the nation’s fight against terrorism by organising a free concert for troops battling insurgents in the northeast.

Omokri, in a recent post, highlighted the challenging conditions faced by military personnel stationed in the arid regions of Nigeria, where they endure extreme weather, injuries, and the constant threat of death from terrorists.

He suggested that Nigerian entertainers could perform for the troops at secure locations in Borno, offering not only music but also a chance to interact and uplift the morale of the soldiers.

“Sing, dance, and perform for them. Interact with the officers and men. Laugh with them,” he urged, emphasising the importance of showing appreciation for the sacrifices made by the military in safeguarding the country.

Omokri further proposed a collaboration among Nigerian artistes to launch a charity single, similar to the 1980s’ USA for Africa’s “We Are The World,” to raise funds for internally displaced persons (IDPs), particularly orphans.

He pointed out the stark contrast between the lavish lifestyles of some entertainers, who flaunt private jets and expensive cars, and the dire situation faced by millions of displaced Nigerians. Omokri encouraged the entertainment industry to use their influence for a greater cause.

“Nigerian entertainers can make a real difference. The power of music to raise funds for the less privileged should not be underestimated,” Omokri stated, recalling his own experience in producing a charity single for Leah Sharibu, which raised thousands of dollars for her family.

In his message, Omokri urged both secular and gospel artistes to consider taking up the mantle, saying, “The best use of your celebrity is to support charity.”

He closed with a call for the music and movie industries to use their platform to promote patriotism and aid in famine relief, stressing that supporting these causes would be one of the most impactful ways to show love for the country and its people.
