The announcement was made during Thursday’s plenary session, where Speaker Tajudeen Abbas highlighted the lawmakers’ commitment to addressing the nation’s critical needs.

In a bid to alleviate the economic challenges faced by vulnerable Nigerians following the removal of the petrol subsidy, the House of Representatives has announced plans to submit a proposal of N704.91 million to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by December 31, 2024.

The funds, contributed by House members, are earmarked exclusively for supporting citizens most affected by the economic downturn.

The announcement was made during Thursday’s plenary session, where Speaker Tajudeen Abbas highlighted the lawmakers’ commitment to addressing the nation’s critical needs.

“If you recall, about five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the critical needs of the Nigerian people. I am happy to inform you that so far, we have contributed N704,907,578.82. On December 31, I will lead a delegation of leadership to hand over the money to the president for the exclusive use of the vulnerable Nigerians who really need it,” Abbas said.

The initiative traces back to July 18, when the House resolved to cut 50 per cent of their salaries for six months. This decision came after Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu moved a motion during a plenary session, urging members to make personal sacrifices to support Nigerians grappling with hunger and economic hardship.

“This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50 per cent for a period of six months. Our salary is N600,000 a month. I want to plead that we let go of 50 per cent of our salary for a period of six months,” Kalu stated while moving the motion.

The decision, adopted by the House, was also seen as part of efforts to address the grievances that fueled protests against bad governance. Speaker Abbas praised the members for their steadfastness and dedication, saying, “The contributions you made highlight the steadfastness and dedication of members to addressing the critical needs of Nigerians.”
