Presidency slams Peter Obi over ‘Insensitive’ remarks on Anambra, Oyo tragedies

Sunday Dare, Special Adviser, Media & Public Communication to President Bola Tinubu, in an X post described Obi’s comments as lacking statesmanship and decency, accusing him of exploiting misfortunes for political gain.

He likened Obi to the Yoruba term ‘Aríje nínú Màdàrú’, meaning one who benefits from chaos and confusion.

“His recent remarks regarding the avoidable tragedies in Anambra and Oyo states lack statesmanship and decency, even as he wallows in the fading waters of his much-vaunted political victory,” Dare wrote. “This attempt to score cheap political points falls flat.”

Highlighting the role of true leadership during crises, Dare commended President Tinubu for his swift response to the tragedies.

According to Dare, Tinubu cancelled all official engagements, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, and directed an immediate investigation into the incidents.

“This is the way of true leaders,” Dare asserted.

The former minister noted that the unfortunate incidents underscored the need for improved crowd management, adherence to necessary permits, and patience during events.

He emphasised the government’s commitment to resolving the current economic challenges in Nigeria, adding that reforms were already yielding results.

“While the government has a role to play, citizens also have responsibilities,” Dare stated. “The ongoing reforms have started to bear fruits, and soon, Nigeria will feel the positive impacts.”

The tragedies in Anambra and Oyo have sparked national conversations on event safety and governance, with citizens and political figures offering varied opinions on the way forward.
