Sowunmi appealed to political leaders across Nigeria’s geo-political zones to prioritise democratic values and foster unity.

Otunba Segun Sowunmi, a key figure in the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has cautioned Nigerians against the dangers of tribal rhetoric, warning that such divisive language could destabilise the nation.

Speaking to journalists in Abeokuta on Monday, Sowunmi highlighted Nigeria’s precarious situation, urging citizens and political leaders to adopt responsible and constructive approaches to governance.

He expressed concern over the growing tribalisation of government policies, warning that when coupled with the nation’s economic struggles, it could lead to devastating outcomes.

“The current state of the nation demands constructive engagement with the government, not divisive rhetoric,” he said.

Sowunmi appealed to political leaders across Nigeria’s geo-political zones to prioritise democratic values and foster unity.

He called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to restructure his economic team and ensure balanced appointments to help ease mounting tensions.

Reflecting on the Tinubu administration’s early moves, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira, Sowunmi described the government’s start as “wobbly” and called for urgent corrective measures.

To promote unity and dialogue, Sowunmi introduced an initiative called “The Alternative,” designed to provide innovative approaches to democracy and foster meaningful engagement while mitigating the risks of tribal rhetoric.

A seasoned political strategist, Sowunmi served as the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s 2019 presidential campaign.
