The FBI released a detailed timeline on Thursday tracing Shamsud-Din Jabbar’s movements leading up to the deadly New Year’s Day attack on Bourbon Street that claimed 14 lives.
December 30: Jabbar rents a Ford F-150 in Houston via Turo, a private vehicle rental service.
December 31: Jabbar drives to New Orleans in the evening.
Early January 1: Surveillance footage captures Jabbar planting explosive devices in coolers at two locations on Bourbon Street between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. Many pedestrians noticed the coolers but passed by, said FBI Deputy Assistant Director Christopher Raia.
1:29 a.m.: Jabbar posts the first of five videos to Facebook, revealing he initially planned to harm loved ones but instead sought to focus attention on a “war between believers and disbelievers.” He also claimed affiliation with ISIS since the summer.
3:02 a.m.: Jabbar posts his final video and shares a last will and testament.
3:15 a.m.: Driving down Canal Street, Jabbar abruptly turns onto a Bourbon Street sidewalk, mowing down pedestrians. He exchanged gunfire with officers, injuring two, before being fatally shot.
Authorities are analyzing three phones and two laptops linked to Jabbar for further leads, Raia added.
