Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appealed to privileged Nigerians to extend support to the families of fallen heroes, recognising the ultimate sacrifices made by these brave individuals in service to the nation.

Speaking at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Parade and Wreath Laying Ceremony held at the Remembrance Arcade, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, Sanwo-Olu stressed the importance of honouring their sacrifices by caring for their loved ones.

The Governor was represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat.

He stated, “Every year we do this in honour of our fallen heroes. We all know they sacrifice their lives so that we can stay in peace. In essence, the process is for Nigerians to contribute to the needs of those they left behind.

“Besides, it is not too much if the privileged ones among us take care of the children they left behind. This remembrance day is not just about the parade; it is about that process, and we just hope that Nigerians can always help to sustain our fallen heroes.”

The Governor emphasised that the annual event is not merely ceremonial but a rallying call to assist the families of those who paid the ultimate price for the nation’s peace and security.

He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting living heroes, particularly the veterans.

“We collaborate with them throughout the year in various ways, through their agencies, and even create employment opportunities for them. There are so many things that we are doing, and of course, every year we want to get better by listening to them and ensuring that we help in sustaining their families,” he said.

The ceremony featured several symbolic activities, including prayers, laying of wreaths, a parade, and the release of pigeons and balloons, symbolising peace and unity.
