Alhaji Sani Haruna, Chairman of Gombe Local Government Council and the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Gombe State, has announced plans to recruit 1,100 volunteers across the 11 LGAs of Gombe State to address understaffing at Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities and bolster the state’s healthcare system.
Haruna revealed the initiative, which has received approval from Governor Inuwa Yahaya, is aimed at easing the burden on health workers, particularly in rural areas, and enhancing healthcare delivery. Each of the 11 LGAs will recruit 100 volunteers to support PHC facilities in providing essential services, with a special focus on reducing maternal mortality and improving primary health care.
“The recruitment drive will provide much-needed assistance to the state’s health workers, especially in rural areas where health facilities are struggling due to staff shortages,” Haruna said.
He also emphasized the program’s goal of reducing maternal and infant mortality, which remains a top priority for the state government.
Haruna further highlighted the importance of community engagement in tackling public health issues, announcing plans to conduct sensitization campaigns to combat myths surrounding vaccines. Workshops for traditional and religious leaders will be held to educate them on vaccine safety, with the aim of improving public trust and acceptance of immunization.
Additionally, Haruna stressed the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, urging health workers and stakeholders to intensify efforts in promoting this vital practice for better child health outcomes.
