In a dramatic finish, Darwin Núñez proved the hero as Liverpool overcame a resilient Brentford side, securing a 2-0 victory in Saturday’s Premier League clash at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The Uruguayan forward came off the bench to deliver two late strikes that cemented Liverpool’s position at the league summit.
The match was a cagey affair for most of the 90 minutes, with Brentford frustrating the visitors with a compact defensive setup.
Liverpool dominated possession and created chances, but goalkeeper Mark Flekken was a formidable barrier, denying multiple attempts, including a point-blank header from Cody Gakpo and a fizzing shot from Dominik Szoboszlai.
Brentford had their moments too, with Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa causing trouble for Liverpool’s backline.
Alisson Becker showcased his brilliance with a series of crucial saves, including a fingertip stop to deny Wissa late in the second half.
The breakthrough came in stoppage time, with Trent Alexander-Arnold at the heart of the action. In the 91st minute, the fullback’s precise cutback found Núñez unmarked in the box, and the forward coolly slotted the ball into the net to break the deadlock.
As Brentford pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Liverpool capitalised again just two minutes later. Harvey Elliott played a clever pass into the box, and Núñez hammered a powerful shot into the roof of the net, leaving Flekken with no chance and sealing all three points for the visitors.
The game also saw a flurry of yellow cards, with referee Andy Madley maintaining order in a physical contest. Núñez himself received a caution moments after his first goal for an overzealous celebration, but the forward’s contributions ultimately overshadowed the booking.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised Núñez’s impact, stating, “Darwin showed why he’s so valuable. His energy and composure made the difference today.”
