The Lagos State Government has revealed plans to generate a combined daily water supply capacity of 100 million gallons through its major waterworks projects.

The announcement came during an inspection visit by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, to the Adiyan 1 and 2 waterworks on Tuesday.

Wahab, addressing journalists after the tour, highlighted the government’s commitment to providing pipe-borne water across the state.

He noted that the ongoing laying of an 8.1-kilometre pipeline network would serve several communities and boost water supply.

According to Wahab, Adiyan Waterworks 1 is designed to deliver 70 million gallons daily, Adiyan 2 will add 11 million gallons, while Iju and Ishashi waterworks will each contribute 5 million gallons. This totals an estimated 100 million gallons per day to cater to Lagos residents.

“This is a major project Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is determined to complete. Adiyan 1 and 2 are critical components, with Adiyan 1 expected to pump 70 million gallons daily. The project is on track to be completed by the last quarter of 2027,” Wahab stated.

He disclosed that the project involves laying 8.1 kilometres of 1,600mm diameter ductile iron pipes for raw water pumping mains within the Adiyan premises.

Wahab expressed satisfaction with the progress and assured residents of improved water access.

“The completion of this project means most Lagos households will have access to clean pipe-borne water, a key target of this administration,” Wahab added.

The project manager from Salini Nigeria Limited, Mr Cifola Daniele, confirmed that the water treatment plant, designed to meet World Health Organisation (WHO) standards, will have a capacity of 320,000 cubic metres per day.

Expected to be completed in 36 months, the project aims to end water scarcity across Lagos communities.

Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation, Engr Muktar Tijani, praised the Commissioner’s proactive measures and commitment to resolving project challenges.
