Controversial Nigerian singer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has been released from Kuje Prison after weeks of detention.

Human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju confirmed the singer’s release in a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Speed Darlington is out of Kuje Prison.”

The release comes after an Abuja court granted Darlington bail, following pressure on the Nigeria Police Force to either charge him or comply with a court order for his release.

Darlington had petitioned Deputy Inspector-General of Police Dasuki Galadanchi, urging compliance with Justice M.S. Liman’s directive to charge him in court within 48 hours or release him unconditionally.

The singer’s arrest stemmed from his controversial allegations against Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy, whom he accused of having an inappropriate relationship with U.S. rapper and music executive Sean Combs, also known as P. Diddy.
