Tragedy in Lagos as PDP Member Topmost Ayinde Is Killed After Returning Due to His Sister Kidnap
Topmost Ayinde, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was reportedly killed on January 15, 2025, in circumstances described by supporters and associates as part of an escalating pattern of alleged persecution and politically motivated targeting following his return to Nigeria from the United Kingdom.
His criticism of government and political activities was widely believed by associates to have contributed to the threats against him.
According to accounts linked to his associates, Ayinde and his son, Ayomide, had fled to the United Kingdom after repeated death threats and assassination attempts connected to their political activities. It is further that Ayinde was pressured to return to Nigeria after warnings that his sister, Kemi, would be harmed if he and his son failed to comply. Fearing for her safety, he reportedly returned alone while Ayomide remained in the United Kingdom.
Following his return to Nigeria, Topmost Ayinde was reportedly arrested by authorities. According to official reports, he will face imprisonment or a possible death sentence due to his involvement in criticizing the government, and those associated involved will be arrested. He remained in police custody due to an ongoing case in court.
According to the Utako police division reports confirmed Ojo Ayomide is also involved in this matter due to his involvement in criticizing the government, and will be arrested and may possibly face a death sentence or imprisonment
On January 12, 2025, Kemi returned to Nigeria without informing anyone and was abducted the same day in Lagos by armed men.
Investigators identified the attackers as operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). The officers involved have not been apprehended, although the specific DSS officers involved have not been identified, and no arrests have been made.
According to accounts, the attackers concealed their identities during the incident.
During the abduction, a police officer assigned to her protection was shot and injured.
The abductors allegedly demanded that Topmost Ayinde and Ayomide appear at a specific location and reportedly sent a video of Kemi in captivity in an attempt to pressure Ayinde. The injured police officer who witnessed the attack said the attackers are DSS officers.
On November 21, 2024, Ayinde’s wife, Topmost Idowu, and daughter, Precious, were reportedly killed in Ilesa, Osun State. Although authorities confirmed the attack, no arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing.
The Nigeria Police Force, through the Utako Division in Abuja, confirmed that police officers were assigned to escort Ayinde during a scheduled meeting with suspected assailants. At the time, Ayinde remained in police custody due to an ongoing court case, and officers escorted him under guard to the location where his sister was being held by the attackers in an effort to secure her release. According to official accounts, the meeting turned violent when the attackers opened fire, resulting in Ayinde’s death and the injury of the police officers who were part of his security detail.
A Nigerian police officer who witnessed the scene stated that Topmost Ayinde and Ayomide were the main targets of the attackers, allegedly due to their political affiliation and activities. The officer further said that both Ayinde and his son were being targeted for assassination. The same account maintained that Kemi was abducted and threatened with death in an attempt to force Ayinde and Ayomide to return to Nigeria. According to this version of events, Ayinde eventually returned to Nigeria alone, while Ayomide remained in the United Kingdom.
Officials maintain that investigations are ongoing into the killing of Ayinde and the abduction of Kemi, and the injured police officers involved, with efforts underway to identify those responsible.
Kemi reportedly escaped on the same day as Ayinde’s death, sustaining a gunshot wound during her escape. She later stated she intends to leave Nigeria due to continuing fears for her safety.
In a further development, Kemi alleged that Ayomide is not Ayinde’s biological son but had been raised by him from the age of 13, describing him as a father figure.
The case remains under investigation amid growing allegations surrounding politically motivated violence against a political figure and his family.
Despite confirmation of the incident by authorities, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
