Dr Nonye Soludo, wife of the Anambra State Governor, has pledged to ensure the prosecution of a man accused of setting his wife ablaze in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area.

Dr Soludo, founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, made the promise while addressing journalists in Awka on Thursday, stating her commitment to ensuring justice is served in the tragic case.

“I saw the viral incident and directed an immediate visit to the scene of the incident,” she said.

“I have received details of the incident from the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo, and her Health counterpart, Dr Afam Obidike, who visited the scene.

“I will ensure that the case is followed closely until justice is served,” she added.

The victim, Mrs Chioma Nwaka, a mother of five boys, was seen in a viral video on Tuesday, fleeing for safety while suffering from severe third-degree burns.

Eyewitnesses reported that her husband, Mr Sunday Nwaka, allegedly doused her in fuel and set her on fire following a disagreement.

Passers-by and neighbours managed to extinguish the flames but not before extensive burns had been inflicted.

Mrs Nwaka was rushed to a medical facility in Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area, where she succumbed to her injuries at about 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

The suspect has since been arrested and is expected to face charges.

Dr Soludo condemned the act as “gruesome and evil” and expressed concern over the increasing cases of domestic violence and abuse.

“The state government takes the issue of domestic violence and abuse as serious crimes, and no one who is found guilty of such offences will walk free,” she stated.

The governor’s wife also emphasised the need for social reformation, linking the rise in domestic violence to drug abuse and related issues.

“We need a systemic approach to fighting drug use and related problems,” she said.

Furthermore, Dr Soludo assured that the state government would support the victim’s five children.

“However, the state government will find the best approach to take care of the five children of the victim,” she said. (NAN)
