U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, demanding an immediate end to the ongoing war with Ukraine or face unprecedented economic penalties, including new taxes, tariffs, and sanctions.
In a series of statements shared on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump emphasised the urgency of resolving the conflict.
“We can do it the easy way or the hard way,” he wrote, pledging to impose severe financial measures on Russia if the war persists.
The U.S. president criticised Putin’s leadership, accusing him of “destroying Russia” through the prolonged conflict that began in February 2022.
He reiterated his stance that the war would not have started under his presidency.
“If we don’t make a deal soon, I have no choice but to put high levels of taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States and other participating countries. Let’s get this war over with!” Trump declared.
Despite his strong rhetoric, Trump acknowledged his affection for the Russian people and his past cordial relationship with Putin, stating, “I’m not looking to hurt Russia. I love the Russian people.”
This latest warning follows Trump’s earlier criticism of Putin, signalling a significant shift in his tone toward the Russian leader.
While Trump had previously promised to end the war within 24 hours of taking office, the conflict remains unresolved.
