A pro-democracy activist and National Coordinator of the Coalition of Pro-Democracy Groups For A Better Nigeria, who is now based in Ibadan, Comrade Awa Bamiji is currently in a serious health crisis.

According to a release by his deputy, Comrade Alimi Kolawole which was forwarded to PMNEWS in Lagos, the long-standing activist is confronting serious health challenges following a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) he experienced on November 4, 2024.

The release noted that “the medical condition has led to partial hemiplegia affecting his right upper and lower limbs, as well as cognitive impairments that have severely impacted his ability to recognise individuals, memorise information and speak coherently.”

The release added that since the onset of his illness, Bamiji has been undergoing a rigorous treatment regimen designed to aid in his recovery.

The report said, his current medication is focused not only on restoring function to his limbs but also on improving his cognitive abilities and speech.

Bamiji’s physician, Dr Julius Olalare, was also quoted to have said the challenges faced by the activist require psychological support in addition to medical treatment.

“According to a medical report issued on December 10, 2024, by Dr Olalere, Comrade Awa Bamiji, though gradually recovering, still needs not only physiotherapist assistance but also psychological and financial support to procure his medications.

“Bamiji has, however, been referred to the University of Ibadan for further treatment.

“We, therefore, call on Nigerians to please come to his aid to restore his health,” the release said.

Awa Bamiji was a frontline advocate during the nationwide campaign for the actualisation of Chief M.K.O Abiola’s June 12, 1993 mandate, which was truncated by the military governments of generals Babangida and Abacha.

There were calls recently from pro-democracy groups for his nomination and appointment by President Bola Tinubu-led administration to serve as compensation for his selfless struggle spanning over 30 years.
