Panic and outrage erupted in the Morocco area of Shomolu, Lagos, on Friday morning after a suspected drunk driver rammed into a group of soldiers on a routine morning jog, leaving four feared dead and several others injured.
The soldiers, attached to Myoung Barracks, were engaged in their monthly road walk when tragedy struck.
Eyewitnesses said a speeding Toyota vehicle, occupied by three young men, veered off course and ploughed into the troops outside the barracks.
A resident, Priscilla, told the Punch that the impact was devastating.
“The car was moving at full speed before ramming into the soldiers. Immediately after the crash, the young men tried to flee, but they were caught and beaten mercilessly by an angry mob. Their vehicle was also vandalised,” she recounted.
The chaos escalated when one of the suspects was reportedly stabbed during the fracas, heightening tensions in the area.
As fear and uncertainty gripped the community, security operatives remained silent on the incident.
Efforts to get an official statement from the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Olabisi Ayeni, and the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
