No Insurance, no mercy: Police begin nationwide 3rd Party Insurance enforcement

In a renewed commitment to road safety, the Nigeria Police Force has reiterated the enforcement of Mandatory Third Party Insurance, set to begin on February 1st, 2025.

This directive, issued by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, aims to ensure that all vehicle owners comply with insurance regulations designed to safeguard both themselves and others on the road.

This is contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi.

Adejobi said vehicle owners and operators were strongly advised to adhere to this regulation to avoid penalties, saying that any vehicle found without valid Third Party Insurance would be subject to strict enforcement, including fines or other legal actions as stipulated by existing laws.

He said the nationwide enforcement would see officers empowered to conduct checks, with IGP Egbetokun directing all State Commissioners of Police to ensure full compliance.

Adejobi stated that the move was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen traffic laws and improve public safety on Nigerian roads.

“The Police Force calls on all road users to cooperate with this initiative, underscoring the importance of insurance in preventing potential financial and personal harm in the event of road accidents. Public support is crucial to the success of this measure.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to enhancing public safety through the strict application of traffic regulations,” he said.
