Ned Nwoko, representing the Delta North Senatorial District in the Senate, has explained why he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Senate formally announced his defection from the PDP to the ruling APC on Wednesday, following his recent resignation from the opposition party.
Thunderous chants erupted as he was escorted to the majority wing of the Upper Chamber.
In addition to his defection, the senator, in a correspondence read by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, called for the establishment of an ad hoc committee to investigate the ongoing crisis within the PDP.
He stressed the importance of a viable opposition to safeguard Nigeria’s political landscape and ensure a balanced democratic process.
In an exclusive interview with BBC Pidgin, Ned confirmed his defection and gave more insight into why he left the PDP after over twenty years.
“Yes, I have left the PDP. I am now a card-carrying member of the APC, and I formally resigned from the PDP last week.”
“The PDP is in disarray. You can see the fights on television, you can see the crisis. We had hoped that the PDP would be a formidable opposition, but that has not been my experience in the last two years,” he said.
He further explained that this was his first time being in opposition, and it has not favoured his people when it comes to the projects that should have been implemented in the state to improve their lives.
According to him, the people who voted for him deserved to benefit, and one of the key reasons he decided to make this “sacrifice” is due to the over fifty-year-long agitation of his people for their own Anioma State.
He also noted that the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has failed at every level and that the crisis within the party is beyond resolution.
