Lagos tightens safety measures in Model Colleges, declares student protection non-negotiable

The Lagos State Safety Commission has reinforced its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students in Lagos State Model Colleges, declaring that there will be no compromise on student protection.

Speaking at a safety sensitisation training for house managers, food vendors, and other key stakeholders in Lagos State Model Colleges, the Director-General of the Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, represented by the Technical Adviser, Mr. Seun Awojobi, emphasised the government’s determination to prioritise security in boarding schools.

He stated that the training aimed to educate participants on the importance of adhering to safety protocols to prevent avoidable accidents and security breaches.

“The safety of our students cannot be compromised. We are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our students to learn and grow,” he declared.

He noted that the Lagos State Safety Commission has been working tirelessly to ensure that all schools in the state strictly adhere to safety standards and protocols.

Highlighting the crucial role of house managers and vendors in ensuring student safety, Mojola reminded participants of their responsibility to identify risks and prevent accidents.

“You are the eyes and ears of the school, and we rely on you to help us identify potential safety risks and prevent accidents,” he stated, urging them to apply their newly acquired knowledge to their schools.

The Special Adviser on Education in Ogun State and former Director-General of Education Quality Assurance in Lagos State, Dr. Ronke Soyombo, spoke extensively on quality service delivery, effective housekeeping, emotional intelligence, student safety, and crowd control in boarding schools.

Retired Director of Public Safety and Well-being at the Commission, Mr. Adeyinka Adebiyi, addressed food safety and hygiene, as well as risk and hazard identification.

Principal of Lagos State Junior Model College Badore, Mrs. Soyoye Bamidele Oredola, stressed the importance of effective communication, stating that housemasters and caregivers must be good listeners and ready to provide solutions to students’ challenges.

Chief Fire Officer of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Engr. Olukotun Odunayo, alongside Mrs. Bosede Akanni, conducted training on Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), evacuation procedures, assembly points, proper fire extinguisher usage, fire alarms, fire prevention, and fire management.

The programme was attended by house managers, food vendors, and stakeholders from various Lagos State Model Colleges, who were provided with training materials and signages to help them implement safety protocols and procedures in their respective schools.
