Chief Reuben Fasoranti, the Asiwaju of Yorubaland and Leader of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has paid tribute to the late Pa Ayo Adebanjo, describing him as a patriot of the highest order and a great hero.
In a statement personally signed by Fasoranti and released by Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jare Ajayi, the elder statesman lamented Adebanjo’s passing, calling it a significant loss to Nigeria.
Fasoranti highlighted Adebanjo’s contributions to Nigeria’s independence struggle and his relentless fight for democracy, noting that his impact would remain etched in the country’s history.
“It is with great shock and sorrow that I received the news of the passing of Chief Samuel Ayodeji Adebanjo—my brother, comrade-in-arms, and political associate for over 70 years.
A patriot par excellence, he was an unrelenting ideologue who fought for noble causes under the banner of Afenifere, where he once served as Acting Leader.
Members of the Afenifere family will deeply miss this fallen hero.”
Fasoranti described Adebanjo as a custodian of the progressive values that shaped Nigerian politics.
“As a disciple of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he remained committed to good governance, the rule of law, and the protection of Nigerians’ fundamental rights.
His tireless advocacy for restructuring was driven by his unwavering belief that only a truly federal Nigeria—where justice and fairness reign supreme—could fulfill the people’s aspirations.”
He prayed for strength for Adebanjo’s family in this time of grief.
Princess Abiodun Oyefusi, the 2023 Deputy Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, also mourned Adebanjo, describing him as a towering figure in Nigeria’s political and socio-cultural landscape.
In a heartfelt statement, Oyefusi praised Adebanjo’s courage, convictions, and unwavering love for Nigeria.
“His transition at 96 marks the end of an era of fearless advocacy, selfless leadership, and an unyielding commitment to democracy, justice, and the advancement of the Yoruba people.
He was not just a nationalist; he was a beacon of integrity, a steadfast defender of true federalism, and a relentless voice for equity and good governance.”
Oyefusi lauded Adebanjo’s leadership in Afenifere, where he remained a vocal advocate for restructuring and citizens’ rights.
“His dedication to democratic ideals was unwavering. He stood firm in his beliefs, undeterred by political intimidation or personal risk. His decades of activism and political engagement remain a source of inspiration for leaders across generations.”
She described him as a mentor and father figure whose wisdom and public service left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s history.
“He will be greatly missed, not just by the Yoruba people but by all Nigerians who shared his vision for a just and progressive nation.”
Oyefusi extended her condolences to his family, Afenifere members, and all who held him dear, expressing hope that his legacy would continue to inspire efforts toward a better Nigeria.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adebanjo passed away on Friday in Lagos at the age of 96. Since the announcement, his Lekki residence has been filled with family, friends, and Afenifere chieftains paying their respects.
