By Nkrumah Bankong-Obi/Lafia
The Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, on Friday, inaugurated new commissioners who will constitute the bulk of the State Executive Council.
The event which took place at the Lafia City Hall, Lafia, follows the confirmation of sixteen nominees by the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, NSHA last week.
In his address, Governor Sule admonished the appointees to avoid any corrupt act that could impede their performance while in office.
In a way of demonstrating his anti-corruption stance, the governor withheld the swearing-in of one of the commissioners who, though cleared by NSHA, had questions to answer about a matter that cropped up after the screening exercise by the Assembly.
He noted that eschewing corruption will help the commissioners up the antes of governance in the State. “Let me emphasize that Administration cherishes hard work, dedication, commitment, loyalty and selfless service. I must remind you all that public service is public trust. You are therefore, coming at a time that this Administration is poised to achieving more robust development that will be enduring and all inclusive,” imploring the new political heads of Ministries to wake up to the challenges with the view to achieving results for the overall interest of the State.
While congratulating the officials, Governor Sule called on them to justify the confidence placed on them by impacting on the system, the years of experiences they have garnered over the years. The governor also thanked the Speaker and members of the NSHA for their cooperation in screening the then-nominees promptly.
He announced the portfolios of the news commissioners as follows: Gabriel Angbashi, Science and Technology, Munira Abdullahi, Finance and Budget Planning, Yakubu Kwanta, Youths and Sports, Tanko Tunga, Land and Urban Development, Isaac Danladi Amadu, Environment and Natural Resources, Ibrahim Tanko, Information, Culture and Tourism, John Mamman, Education, Aminu Maifata, Local Governments, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Usman Baba, Security, etc.
The governor announced the sack of members of the State Teaching Service Commission. He said the body had been found culpable in the management of recruitment and other affairs of the Commission. He said that although the report of an independent body setup to beam searchlight on the affairs of the TSC had long been submitted, no action was taken because of the absence of a properly constituted State Executive Council.
“Indeed, without any ambiguity, a lot of wrongdoing had happened under the last TSC members, from the Chairman all the way to the other members. Without any ambiguity, the government has no choice but to terminate their appointments immediately.”
The new SEC is being reconstituted since the governor dissolved the last one on January 2, 2025.
