A tragic accident on the Damaturu-Maiduguri road has claimed the lives of 10 people, leaving three others injured, according to the Yobe State Police Command.
SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the Command’s spokesperson, confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.
The accident occurred around 10 a.m. at a security checkpoint in Warsala Town when a truck, loaded with cement and passengers, lost control and rammed into a car before plunging into a ditch.
“Of the 13 passengers aboard the trailer, 10 died on the spot, while three sustained injuries,” Abdulkarim said.
The injured victims have been taken to the Specialist Hospital in Damaturu for urgent medical care.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the truck’s driver lost control, colliding with the car before veering into the ditch.
Miraculously, the driver of the car, who was alone in the vehicle, survived unscathed in the accident, though the vehicle sustained significant damage.
Authorities have commenced an investigation into the cause of the crash.
