Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to reaffirm their commitment to regional integration and the vision of a united, prosperous, and peaceful West Africa.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the ECOWAS Parliamentary Seminar in Lagos on Friday, Sanwo-Olu urged leaders to eliminate trade barriers and promote free movement across the region to foster economic growth and inclusivity.

The event, marking ECOWAS’ 50th anniversary and the ECOWAS Parliament’s 25th anniversary, was held at the Continental Hotel, Victoria Island.

“We must strengthen our institutions to ensure they are responsive, inclusive, and effective. Economic integration must be deepened by removing barriers to trade, investment, and free movement. We must promote peace and security by addressing the root causes of conflict while also empowering our youth through education, innovation, and job creation,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu underscored Lagos’ pivotal role in ECOWAS’ journey, describing the state as the region’s economic and cultural hub.

“As a gateway for trade, investment, and cultural exchange, Lagos embodies the spirit of regional integration that ECOWAS represents. We remain committed to supporting ECOWAS in its mission to improve lives.

“The challenges we face—whether in security, economic development, or climate change—require collective action, and Lagos stands ready to collaborate with ECOWAS and its member states,” he added.

Reflecting on ECOWAS’ legacy, Sanwo-Olu praised the regional body for its contributions to economic cooperation, conflict resolution, and democratic governance, while commending the ECOWAS Parliament for its role in shaping regional policies and advocating for citizens’ rights.

“The ECOWAS Parliament has championed the cause of integration, supported peacekeeping missions, and advanced democratic values. Today, ECOWAS stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when nations unite for a common goal,” he said.

ECOWAS Parliament Speaker, Rt. Hon. Hadja Memounatou Ibrahima, acknowledged the body’s achievements over the past five decades, particularly in economic development and peacekeeping. She noted that hosting the golden jubilee celebrations in Lagos was significant, given the state’s historical role as the host of the Treaty of Lagos.

Also speaking, the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament and Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, highlighted the bloc’s progress in fostering cooperation and economic prosperity.

He commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for hosting the landmark event and for his administration’s numerous infrastructural projects across Lagos State.
