Five docked for hacking WhatsApp account to commit N650k fraud

Five suspects identified as Braimo Kehinde, Sodiq Adisa, Sunday John, Yakub Ojo and Bamidele Victor were on Tuesday arraigned before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, for alleged hacking the WhatsApp account of one Mr Olusola Aremu to commit N650, 000 fraud.

Kehinde, 18, Adisa, 18; Yakub Ojo,18; John, 18 and Victor, 22, who all reside in Eleyele area of Ibadan, are facing a nine-count charge bordering on conspiracy, fraud and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Akeem Akinloye, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Jan. 31 at Eleyele, Ibadan.

Akinloye said the defendants hacked the WhatsApp account of the complainant, Mr Olusola Aremu and impersonated him and solicited for funds from his friends.

He said that the defendants called five of the complainant’s friends and collected the sum of N650, 000 from them.

Akinloye said the offences contravened Section 383, 419 and 516 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State, 2000.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olabisi Ogunkanmi, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N200.000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.

Ogunkanmi ordered that one of the sureties must be a parent to each of the defendants, while the other surety should show evidence of one year tax payment to Oyo State Government.

She adjourned the case until July 3 for mention.(NAN)
