President Bola Tinubu has approved the employment of 774 National Health Fellows, a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

The programme, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Health, was officially launched on Thursday at the State House, Abuja.

Dignitaries at the event included Nigeria’s development partners, senior government officials, and traditional leaders, notably the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.

The recruitment of the fellows—drawn from each local government area—was based on the recommendation of Professor Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare.

He revealed that the fellows were selected from a competitive pool of 360,000 applicants, underscoring the programme’s merit-driven process.

President Tinubu’s announcement of the employment offer was met with resounding applause from the fellows and attendees.

“This initiative reflects my administration’s commitment to harnessing the vast potential of our youth, who make up over 60% of Nigeria’s population,” Tinubu stated.

“With their energy, innovation, and drive, we can propel our nation towards economic growth and social transformation.”

He emphasised that the National Health Fellows programme is part of his administration’s broader efforts to empower young Nigerians and equip them for leadership in the healthcare sector.

“Your selection is not just a job offer; it is proof of our resolve to create equal opportunities for all Nigerians, regardless of social status, gender, or background,” he added.

The President reiterated the importance of a robust healthcare system, describing it as a fundamental pillar of national development.

“No nation can thrive if its citizens are unhealthy. Sustainable growth depends on a strong healthcare system, and you, the fellows, will be at the forefront of this vision,” he said.

Professor Pate echoed the President’s sentiments, stating that the initiative marks the beginning of a social movement aimed at transforming Nigeria’s health sector.

Also present at the event were Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and Youth Minister Ayodele Olawande, who joined the Olu of Warri in encouraging the newly employed fellows to seize the opportunity and contribute meaningfully to national development.
