As the world marks International Women’s Day 2025, United Bank for Africa (UBA) is reinforcing its dedication to gender diversity and empowerment by ensuring women take centre stage in its workforce.
Aligning with this year’s IWD global theme, “Accelerate Action,” UBA continues to break barriers by fostering inclusion and advancing opportunities for women in the corporate space.
A testament to this commitment is the bank’s latest Graduate Management Accelerated Programme (GMAP) intake, where women made up a remarkable 58% of the 1,138 graduates.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony held at Landmark Event Centre, UBA’s Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Oliver Alawuba, highlighted the bank’s unwavering efforts in creating a workplace where meritocracy thrives, regardless of gender or background.
“UBA is not just a financial institution that speaks about inclusion—we live it. With a female-dominated Board and Executive Management team, we have continuously demonstrated that gender parity is not just a value but a strategic pillar of our success. Our commitment goes beyond policies; it is reflected in the tangible opportunities we provide for women at every level of our organisation.”
Alawuba further underscored UBA’s track record in fostering female leadership and professional growth.
“We do not just celebrate women—we amplify them. The fact that women make up the majority of our newest graduate intake reinforces our resolve to nurture female talent and fast-track their career progression in the corporate world.”
UBA has long championed gender empowerment through mentorship initiatives, leadership training, and tailored financial services for female professionals and entrepreneurs.
Modupe Akindele, UBA’s Group Head of Human Resources, affirmed the bank’s dedication to staff development, regardless of gender, stating:
“At UBA, we celebrate the strength and resilience of women. Our goal with GMAP is to show young professionals—both male and female—that their dreams are valid right here in Africa. We are not just providing jobs; we are creating clear pathways to leadership, innovation, and impact.”
With a workforce of 25,000 employees and operations spanning 20 African countries as well as the UK, US, France, and UAE, UBA continues to set the pace in financial inclusion, cutting-edge banking technology, and talent development across the continent.
