Tinubu names heavyweights to lead new Medical, Education Institutions

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of principal officers for the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta, Ogun State, and the Federal College of Education (Technical), Yauri, Kebbi State, as part of his administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s education and healthcare sectors.
Professor Fatiu Abiola Arogundade has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta.
A renowned professor of medicine at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, he currently serves as the College Registrar of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, Ijanikin.
With over 33 years of experience in teaching, research, and academic administration, Arogundade has led groundbreaking initiatives in medical research and institutional reforms.
He is a Fellow of the International Society of Nephrology and has attracted substantial research grants between 2012 and 2023.
Other appointees for the university include Dr Obayomi Olukayode Gregory as Registrar, Mrs Adedokun Omolola Olufunso as Bursar, and Dr Idiat Odunola Agboola as University Librarian.
Gregory previously served as Deputy Registrar at the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja.
Olufunso, a Chartered Accountant, was the Deputy Bursar at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, while Agboola was an Associate Professor of Library Science at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
President Tinubu urged the newly appointed officers to demonstrate visionary leadership and build a strong foundation for the university’s growth.
He expressed confidence that their collective expertise would drive the institution toward producing world-class medical professionals and advancing the nation’s healthcare sector.
In a similar move, Tinubu appointed Professor Sa’adu Umar as the Provost of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Yauri, Kebbi State.
Umar, a Professor of Agricultural Extension, is currently the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero.
His appointment is in recognition of his extensive academic leadership and commitment to educational development.
Also appointed are Mr Abdullahi Ahmed as Registrar, Dr Muhammad Yusuf Alkali as Bursar, and Mrs Maimuna Mohammed Ahmed as Librarian. Ahmed, formerly Deputy Registrar at Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, has served in various administrative capacities at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Potiskum, Yobe State.
Alkali was a former Dean of the School of Accountancy and Finance at Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, while Ahmed was previously the College Librarian at the Niger State College of Nursing Sciences, Minna.
The tenures of these principal officers are set at five years each, with no extensions, in line with the Federal Colleges of Education Act, 2023.
Established by an Act of the National Assembly, the Federal College of Education (Technical), Yauri, is mandated to provide full-time education in technology, applied sciences, arts, social sciences, humanities, and management, equipping future educators with the necessary skills for national development.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to educational excellence and institutional development, ensuring that both institutions fulfill their mandates in producing skilled professionals for Nigeria’s growing healthcare and education sectors.
