U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited discussions about the prospect of the United States acquiring Greenland, asserting that such a move is bound to happen.
“I think it will happen,” Trump declared during an Oval Office exchange with reporters, framing the potential annexation as a matter of “international security.”
The CNN reports that his remarks came during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who refrained from directly addressing Trump’s statement.
However, Rutte acknowledged the strategic significance of the Arctic, stating, “We know things are changing there, and we have to be there.”
While Trump has previously floated the idea of acquiring Greenland, the suggestion has drawn sharp criticism from Denmark, which governs the territory, and has dismissed any possibility of selling it.
