Several international firms fell victim to the scam, including: Japan Long Tie (China), Aquaforest SP (Poland), Vincenzo Frecentese (Italy), and, Siam Canadian China Limited.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a fraudulent syndicate led by Mr. Ikoro Mang Ifendu, who posed as a NAFDAC official to scam foreign companies using counterfeit regulatory documents.

Ifendu, a resident of Aba, Abia State, was arrested on February 7, 2025, following a petition from Thani Almaeeni Trading Group in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The company had applied to register dried seafood but was deceived into making substantial payments under false pretenses.

Investigations revealed that the syndicate operated an elaborate scam using fraudulent legal and banking channels to extort businesses. They lured foreign firms into paying for fake NAFDAC registration certificates and receipts.

The group managed at least 15 domiciliary accounts and five local accounts across seven Nigerian banks, handling transactions exceeding $950,000.

Additionally, an estimated $450,000 was funneled into offshore accounts in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

Shockingly, some victims continued to send money, with a recent alert showing an additional $75,000 deposit.

Investigation uncovered falsified documents, including counterfeit product registration certificates, revenue receipts, and telegraphic transfer documents, all used to deceive unsuspecting businesses.

Several international firms fell victim to the scam, including: Japan Long Tie (China), Aquaforest SP (Poland), Vincenzo Frecentese (Italy), and, Siam Canadian China Limited.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, confirmed that the case will be handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation.

The Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) will also be applied to recover illegally acquired assets.

She strongly cautioned businesses against using agents or consultants for product registration, urging companies to verify and apply for NAFDAC approvals through the official portal: registration.nafdac.gov.ng.

Prof. Adeyeye reaffirmed NAFDAC’s commitment to protecting public health and ensuring strict regulatory compliance.
