Chaos and carnage struck the bustling Upper Iweka axis of Onitsha as an out-of-control truck plowed into pedestrians and vehicles, leaving six dead and several others fighting for their lives.
Confirming the horrifying accident, Anambra State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed in a statement on Sunday that the incident unfolded when the truck lost control, ramming into two tricycles, a commercial bus filled with passengers, and unsuspecting pedestrians.
“The tragic crash claimed six lives, while many others sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving urgent medical care,” Ikenga stated.
He added that the deceased had been moved to the morgue, with authorities reaching out to their families in the wake of the devastating loss.
The police have since taken control of the accident scene to restore order and launch a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Extending condolences to the bereaved families, Ikenga urged drivers to prioritise safety checks before hitting the roads to avert further disasters.
