Nigerian reality TV star and actress Bamike Olawunmi, popularly known as Bambam, has opened up about her harrowing childbirth experience, revealing that her kidney failed and several vital organs shut down during labour.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Me & My Girls podcast, Bambam recounted how complications during the birth of her first child, Zendaya, in 2020 nearly led to a stillbirth.
“During my first labour, my kidney failed, my heart was weak, my liver… everything was just shutting down because of childbirth. She [my daughter] had detached from the placenta. If I was a second late [to the hospital], she would have lost oxygen, and I would have had a stillbirth,” she revealed.
The former Big Brother Naija star also spoke on the issue of medical negligence, stressing that many stillbirths result from poor healthcare.
“A lot of stillbirths are due to negligence. It’s either the doctor was not sound, the nurse didn’t do her job on time, or they arrived at the hospital late,” she said.
Bambam admitted that the traumatic experience left her haunted by “what ifs,” which tormented her for a long time. She eventually sought therapy to help her focus on gratitude rather than fear.
