“We also need to catch these children young and develop their talents so that they can represent their communities, states and Nigeria in future.”

Very energetic primary and secondary school student athletes held spectators at the Alade Stadium, Ajasa, venue of the 21st edition of St. Lawrence Greater Height School Inter-House Sports Festival spellbound on Thursday 6 March 2025 with exciting performances.

The event officially took off at about noon after igniting the traditional light of life to fire up the event.

This was followed by an inspection of guard of honour of Alimosho Scouts by the School’s Proprietor Mrs Kehinde Lucia Adeosun along with her entourage who marched past in between two lines of scouts with ‘swords’ locked across to create a perfect shield.

Thereafter, captivating march past parade was staged by different competing houses.

The real sporting activities of the day were headlined by races ranging from 25 metres to 400 metres sprint races, relay races, basket race, sac race, head balancing, tyre rolling race and field events such as ball games, high jump, long jump, etc.

Other activities of the day include needle and thread, fill in the bottle, balloon burst and novelty match between parents and the junior secondary school students.

St. Lawrence athletes and many other athletes from invited schools displayed astonishing talents and fitness on the field.

Invited schools who actively participated at the sport fiesta include Prince of Glory; Homeland, and Gemliz.

The apparently happy proprietor, Mrs Adeosun said despite the high cost involved, she regularly organized the sports fiesta because “I love sports and it is part of the school curriculum. It motivates the children and helps the community, the school and the environment.

“We also need to catch these children young and develop their talents so that they can represent their communities, states and Nigeria in future.”

Why do many other schools run away from Inter House Sports? She said the financial cost of organizing it was responsible for the observed apathy.

She, nevertheless, advised schools to strive to fulfil this particular educational need of the children and promised to continue organizing it.

The school Administration, Mrs Titilope Arowojobe also spoke eloquently of the imperatives of school sporting activities.

According to her, St. Lawrence organizes sport events often because education is not acquired in the classroom alone, adding that it would only be complete with sports and other extra-curriculum activities.

“Sports make children to be physically and mentally fit. It makes them to develop and showcase their talents.

“We identify those who are talented through events like this,” Arowojobe explained, adding that schools who shy away from organizing such events were ignorant of the abundant benefits of sports to individuals and society.

She described Mama Adeosun as “an icon, an educator to the core. I always look up to emulate her in all areas.”

Other speakers also highlighted the importance of sport education and commended St. Lawrence for placing a high premium on it.
