Nigerian skit maker Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has opened up about his financial struggles and how his reckless spending left him in significant debt.
In a post on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, the comedian shared that he faced severe financial setbacks in 2021 and 2022 due to a scam and a failed investment that wiped out his savings.
Mr Macaroni explained that after losing his money, he resorted to borrowing from multiple sources to meet his financial obligations. Despite earning millions, he underestimated the burden of repaying loans with interest. He admitted that his financial recklessness further compounded his troubles.
“I make money in millions, so I never thought borrowing money to pay back with interest could ever be a problem. But I got too comfortable, and it took me a long time to realize that I was using the money I was earning to pay back my interest,” he said.
The skit maker used the opportunity to caution his followers against borrowing irresponsibly.
“Please don’t borrow money! But if you must, please be responsible,” he advised.
Mr Macaroni described 2024 as a transformative year in his acting career, with two of his films showcased at international festivals and his performances receiving widespread praise. However, the joy of his career milestones was overshadowed by his debts, which exceeded half a billion naira.
Adding to his troubles, the comedian revealed he was deeply hurt by a betrayal from someone he considered a close friend and sister. Despite the setback, he expressed his determination to persevere, crediting his resilience to the support of family and friends.
“One thing about me is that I’m a warrior! I have never backed down from a fight. When I fall, I bounce back even stronger by God’s grace,” he declared.
Mr Macaroni concluded his emotional message by encouraging others facing challenges not to give up, emphasizing the importance of resilience, accountability, and continuous self-improvement.
“May the love in our hearts be forever greater than the hate, betrayal, and wickedness in the world,” he wrote.
