Violent storm: Ogun to conduct integrity test on school building

Ogun Governor, Dapo Abiodun has visited Mayigi Community Comprehensive School, Ilase in Ipokia Local Government Area of the State where rainstorm recently destroyed classrooms, leaving a 14-year old pupil dead and five others including two teachers, the school food vendor alongside her seven-month-old child injured.

Speaking during the visit, the governor who was represented by his Deputy Engr Noimot Salako-Oyedele assured that the pre-requisite quality and integrity test will be done on the school building before it can be put to use.

He revealed that a decision has been taken that the school building will not be in use until that structural integrity test has been completed, and if found satisfactory, the roof put back in place for the pupils’ immediate use.

The Governor also assured that Government will do all within its power to ensure that such occurrence does not repeat itself in its schools, adding that the Zonal Education Officer has also been instructed to go around schools in the community to identify such abandoned buildings in order not to put learners at risk.

Abiodun, who also visited the other victims of the building collapse receiving treatment at the General Hospital Ipokia, said his Administration remains committed to delivering qualitative and quantitative education to all learners of school age across the state.

The State helmsman used the opportunity to visit the Parents of the deceased pupil to commiserate with them on the passing of their son, pledged Government support and the continued safety of pupils by ensuring that infrastructures in Schools are in good shape.

Responding on behalf of the family, Mr Moses Amosun appreciated the State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, his Deputy Engr Noimot Salako-Oyedele and others in the state delegation, saying that though it was a painful loss, the presence of the state government has shown that they are not alone.

In company of the Ogun State Deputy Governor was the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu, Member Representing Ipokia in the state House of Assembly, Hon. Bisi Oyedele, Permanent Secretary Ministry’s of Education and the Teaching Service Commission, Principal General, Yewa Block, Chairman Ipokia Local Government and Kabiesi Oba Alase of Ilase, HRM John Adewale Olaifa amongst others.
