The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has appointed Chief Emmanuel Iyase as Okao Eguae (District Head from the Benin Palace) over Ologbo and Ehor Dukedoms in Ikpoba-Okha and Uhunmwode Local Government Areas of Edo State.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday in Benin by Osaigbovo Iguobaro, the Chief Press Secretary to the Oba.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Iyase’s appointment follows the suspension of the former Enigies (heads) of the dukedoms, Prince Owen Jackson Akenzua and Chief D. E. Igiehon, for allegedly rebelling against the Benin traditional ruler.
Meanwhile, a total of 69 Enigies remain suspended over similar allegations of rebellion.
As the first Okao Eguae from the Benin Palace, Iyase is expected to strengthen traditional leadership structures within the territories under his jurisdiction.
Addressing the newly appointed Okao, Oba Ewuare II cautioned him against unethical practices that could undermine the authority of the throne or bring disrepute to the dukedoms.
The monarch further urged Iyase to work harmoniously with the Edionwere (elders) in the dukedoms while also collaborating with designated top functionaries from the Benin Kingdom to ensure effective administration.
In his response, Chief Iyase, who was accompanied by family members and well-wishers, expressed gratitude to Oba Ewuare II for the honour.
He pledged to uphold good conduct and promote the well-being of the people while fostering the overall development of Ologbo and Ehor Dukedoms. (NAN)
