Lasu set to convocate over 11,000 students

The Lagos State University (LASU) on Thursday said that it would convocate no fewer than 11,917 students at its 2023/2024 convocation ceremony.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, made this known during a news conference to kick start its 28th Convocation Ceremony at the Senate Chamber, Ojo Campus in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 28th convocation ceremony is scheduled to hold from April 3rd to April 10th.

“As an institution, we take immense pride in the opportunity to send forth another cohort of market-ready graduates, solution-oriented individuals. These individuals are well-equipped to make a meaningful impact in both the national and global sectors. A total of 971 diploma students are graduating this year and the breakdown is as follows: 123 distinctions, 550 upper credits, 287 lower credits and 11 pass,” Olatunji-Bello said.

She said that 8,711 students graduated from first degree programmes from the university, adding that 192 came out with first class honours.

“Seventeen students are graduating with Unclassified (MBBS/BDS) degrees, 3076 graduated with second class upper division, 4397 with second class lower division, 990 with third class and 39 with a pass. Out of the 2,235 postgraduate students graduating, we have 302 postgraduate diplomas, 1,132 academic masters degrees, 639 professional masters degrees, 125 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degrees and 37 professional doctoral degrees,” she said.

The vice-chancellor added that the university would be awarding honorary doctorate degrees to some personalities, asides the 162 doctoral degree awardees.

“The Senate of our university will confer honorary doctorate degrees on two eminent Nigerians. One is Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa Rtd., Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and former Military Governor of Lagos State. The second is Otunba Olufemi Pedro, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, for their invaluable contributions to the development of our university and the nation at large. One of our long serving and esteemed academic, Professor Joseph Olagunju will be elevated to the rank of distinguished professor,” Olatunji-Bello disclosed.

She also announced Nwosu Isioma, as the overall best student for the 2023/2024 academic session.

“She is of the Biochemistry Department with a CGPA of 4.93, First Class Honours,” she said.

The LASU vice-chancellor added that the university had secured full accreditation for 43 out of 44 courses it presented during the last accreditation exercise that held in October-November 2023.

She said: “Only one course received interim accreditation.

“The result of the accreditation exercise was released in June 2024 to confirm that all courses in LASU were accredited in line with the first strategic goal of our administration.

“The university stands at the forefront of academic excellence and innovation, and seeks to become the best in West Africa.

“We have continued to advance on the trajectory of quality teaching and research which have birthed several milestones.” (NAN)
