Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has paid a glowing tribute to the late Chief Pascal Dozie, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most intrepid and impactful entrepreneurs.
Chief Dozie, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 85, was remembered by Obasanjo in a heartfelt condolence message issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi.
The former president said the news of Dozie’s death was met with mixed feelings — sadness over the nation’s loss and gratitude for a life of remarkable service.
“We will miss his contribution to the building of a new Nigeria of his dream,” Obasanjo said. “But I am grateful to God for such a life well spent in the service of our fatherland.”
Obasanjo described the late Dozie as a “serial entrepreneur” and “one of the major figures and icons in the Nigerian business and entrepreneurial community in the 20th and 21st centuries.” He lauded Dozie’s exceptional contributions to Nigeria’s economic landscape, noting his key roles as the founder of the defunct Diamond Bank, former Chairman of the MTN Foundation, a former Board Member of African Capital Alliance, and a past President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
The former president praised Dozie’s humility, humanism, and his inclusive nature, stating that he had friends across all social classes and never discriminated based on age or status. He also commended Dozie’s efforts in creating thousands of jobs across Nigeria, regardless of ethnicity or religion.
“I celebrate a man who lived a life of purpose, achievement, and who impacted generations,” Obasanjo said. “He was truly one of those diamonds Nigeria produced. The outpouring of tributes since his death reflects the deep respect and love he earned across the nation.”
Obasanjo concluded by extending his heartfelt condolences to the Dozie family, praying for strength and grace as they mourn their patriarch.
“May the gentle soul of the dear departed rest in perfect peace,” he said.
