Mr. Sam Olumekun, the Acting Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC on Tuesday assured Labour Party of the Commission’s unwavering commitment to neutrality, in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.
Olumekun spoke when he received Labour Party’s delegation led by Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti and the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi
at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The Labour Party delegation visited the headquarters of INEC to discuss key developments within LP, especially, the recent judgement of the Supreme Court on leadership of the party
During the visit, Governor Otti formally presented a Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgment concerning the party’s leadership to the INEC’s acting chairman.
The Abia State Governor4 noted that the meeting was aimed at fostering clarity, mutual understanding, and institutional alignment regarding the LP’s current structure.
The delegation, Olumekun, and other National Commissioners engaged in discussions centered on enhancing collaboration and reinforcing democratic values.
The INEC acting chairman affirmed the commission’s commitment to transparency, and rule of law.
The Labour Party delegation visited INEC headquarters after a meeting of its National Executive Committee, NEC and other stakeholders held in Abuja following the recent judgment of the Supreme Court.
The meeting was attended by major stakeholders and other organs of the party including Obi’s running mate in the 2023 election, Datti Baba-Ahmed, serving and former senators as well as all the senatorial candidates in the 2023 election.
Others are: serving and former House of Representatives members and candidates in the 2023 election as well as all members of the National Caretaker Committee and National Transition Committee.
Also present at the meeting were former governorship candidates who are still in the party, representatives of NLC/TUC Political Commission and all members of the former National Working Committee.
The meeting was called in order to clarify the recent Supreme Court judgment.
The apex court had, on Friday, ruled that the Appeal Court had no jurisdiction over internal affairs of the party.
However, the judgement had sparked off controversies.
The Julius Abure faction of Labour Party said the judgement affirmed its leadership of the party.
However, the Peter Obi and Otti faction said the Abure led NWC has been sacked by the judgment.
