The Lagos State Government has unveiled an ambitious 20-year development plan (2024–2044) aimed at transforming the Ibeju-Lekki area into a dynamic, globally competitive urban hub.

The plan, which was presented on Friday, focuses on enhancing sectors such as tourism, housing, agriculture, and industrial development to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life for residents.

During a stakeholders’ meeting at the Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Secretariat, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, explained that the Ibeju-Lekki Model City Plan is a significant step in the area’s evolution as an emerging economic powerhouse in Lagos State. The plan was created to harness Ibeju-Lekki’s potential in agriculture, tourism, the blue economy, and marine activities.

Olumide highlighted that the plan builds on the existing Lekki Comprehensive Master Plan and introduces a more tailored approach to meet the region’s unique needs and challenges. “The primary goal is to establish Ibeju-Lekki as a thriving urban environment where people can live, work, play, and succeed,” he said.

Key components of the plan include the construction of mass transit systems, youth empowerment programs, social inclusion initiatives, and the integration of technology into community development. The plan aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda and integrates major infrastructural projects in the area, such as the Dangote Refinery, Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lekki Deep Seaport, and Alaro City. Future projects like the proposed Lekki International Airport, Green-Line Rail Project, and the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway are also key to the transformation.

The plan underwent a rigorous consultation process, including a 28-day public inspection across five key locations, and received valuable feedback from traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders. This input will be incorporated to ensure the plan aligns with the aspirations of Ibeju-Lekki’s residents.

The Chairmen of Ibeju-Lekki LCDA and Lekki LCDA, Mr. Abdulahi Oluwa and Mr. Rasak Kasali, expressed their support for the plan and requested an additional month to submit further contributions to refine the document.
