President Bola Tinubu has paid a heartfelt tribute to Nigerian football legend Christian Chukwu, who died on Saturday at the age of 74.
He described him as a “symbol of excellence and patriotism” whose impact on the game will remain etched in the hearts of Nigerians forever.
In a solemn statement, President Tinubu extended his condolences to the family, friends, and admirers of the late sports icon, saying his passing had created a deep void in the nation’s football history.
The President joined millions in mourning the iconic figure who not only captained the Green Eagles to their historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory but also returned years later to lead the Super Eagles to a bronze medal finish at the 2004 AFCON as head coach.
Nicknamed “Chairman” for his imposing leadership and on-pitch authority, Chukwu’s legacy is tightly woven into the fabric of Nigerian football. He was a one-club man with Enugu Rangers, where he won numerous domestic titles and guided the team to continental glory with their 1977 African Cup Winners’ Cup triumph.
President Tinubu eulogised the late sportsman for his unmatched dedication to the beautiful game and his service to the nation.
“Christian Chukwu was more than a footballer and coach. He was a symbol of excellence and patriotism. He brought joy to millions, mentored a generation of footballers, and stood as a pillar of Nigerian brand and sportsmanship on and off the pitch.”
The President highlighted that Chukwu’s legacy transcends goals and victories, saying: “His legacies will continue to live on in the trophies he won, the lives he touched, and the exciting moments he provided to football fans and spectators on the field and in the technical area.
‘We are forever grateful for his contributions to the sport we all love, and we will always remember him with great respect and admiration.”
As the football world continues to reel from the loss, President Tinubu offered prayers for the eternal rest of the departed legend and comfort for his grieving family, expressing hope that they would find solace in the legacy of greatness Chukwu left behind.
