Rivers: Ibas warns LGA administrators against misuse of public funds

The Rivers Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd) has warned the newly appointed sole administrators of the 23 Local Government Areas (LGA) that his administration would not tolerate any form of recklessness, abuse of office, or misuse of public funds.

Ibas who gave the warning during a meeting with the administrators at Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday also urged them to be prudent in their financial dealings and prioritise people’s well-being.

Ibas emphasised the importance of accountability and transparency in managing public funds while urging the administrators to focus on critical areas such as sanitation and environment management, primary healthcare, welfare and discipline of local government civil servants, primary education, and youth engagement.

He stated that the areas of concern would be used to assess their performance in the coming weeks.

Ibas reminded the LGA administrators that they bear a sacred responsibility to ensure that the affairs of their respective councils were managed with utmost care, respect, and dedication to the welfare of the people.

He emphasised that the people of the state deserved to see how their money was being used and that it had been their duty to give proper account and value.

The administrator assured that his administration would work out modalities to monitor and ensure compliance with the principles of due process, transparency, and zero tolerance for financial recklessness across all LGA councils.

He, however, urged them to rise to their responsibilities in order to deliver on the mandate to restore peace and stability and work towards returning all democratic institutions in the state.
