The Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) has issued a chilling warning to residents to steer clear of rickety vehicles or risk their lives.

This comes after the agency swooped on several dangerously dilapidated vehicles operating across the metropolis, many of which, officials say, are nothing short of mobile coffins.

VIS Director, Engr. Akin-George Fashola, minced no words in describing the dire state of some of the seized vehicles — including one he personally intercepted.

“These vehicles are ticking time bombs,” he declared. “They are poorly maintained, fitted with outdated parts, and completely lacking essential safety features.”

According to him, many of these unroadworthy contraptions are responsible for deadly accidents, often resulting in “loss of lives, injuries, and property damage.”

Fashola detailed horrifying discoveries made during inspections: expired and unstable tyres, brake systems held together by makeshift repairs, and rusted-out frames barely holding together.

“Some of these vehicles operate mostly at night,” he warned, “putting unsuspecting passengers in grave danger.”

He added that the VIS is taking a hardline stance:

“The impounded vehicles will not be released back to the roads.”

The agency has vowed to sustain its clampdown on these potential death traps, working closely with transport unions and other stakeholders.

Fashola also urged Lagosians to become part of the safety network by reporting any suspicious vehicles.

“Anyone who comes across rickety vehicles should contact us via [email protected] or through the Ministry of Transportation hotlines: 09020004000 and 09020009000,” he said.
