Lagos strikes back: Squatters evicted, guns seized in Waterfront crackdown

In a renewed effort to tackle illegal encroachment and mounting security threats, the Lagos State Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development (MWID) on Thursday carried out a forceful enforcement exercise at the Okunde Bluewater Scheme in Lekki, dislodging squatters and pulling down makeshift structures allegedly used as criminal hideouts.

The operation, led by the Commissioner, Ekundayo Alebiosu, is part of ongoing measures by the state government to reclaim and protect the strategic coastal corridor in line with the Lagos Mega City Master Plan.

According to Alebiosu, the structures — which were initially cleared late last year — had re-emerged and rapidly deteriorated into a haven for crime, including robbery, drug trafficking, and other illicit activities.

“This is not just about illegal structures; this is about public safety,” Alebiosu stated.

“During today’s operation, dangerous weapons and firearms were recovered, and arrests were made. These structures posed serious security and environmental risks, and allowing them to remain would have been a disservice to the law-abiding residents of Lagos.”

He reiterated the state government’s commitment to its development agenda, noting that the reclaimed land is designated for the construction of the Bluewater Scheme and a coastal road network that will significantly enhance connectivity and bolster the state’s tourism and transport sectors.

“We cleared this large expanse of land late last year, and it is no longer business as usual. Any attempts to rebuild shanties or makeshift structures will be met with swift enforcement,” the Commissioner warned.

The Ministry added that regular surveillance and enforcement would continue to ensure the area remains secure and free from unlawful occupation.

“MWID remains steadfast in its mission to secure and transform all government-owned waterfronts across Lagos State, in alignment with the vision of a clean, secure, and globally competitive Mega City,” Alebiosu concluded.
