Jos businessman jailed over fraudulent grain deal

A 49-year-old businessman, Abubakar Adams, has been jailed 30 months for swindling a woman of N240,000 meant for purchase of grain in Jos, Plateau State.

He was arraigned before Jos Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The Police prosecutor, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that the case was reported at the Area Command Police Station on Feb. 20, by Ms Maryann Ogbue ,the complainant.

Gokwat said the convict collected N240,000 from the the complainant to buy grains for her, but immediately the money was transferred to his account, he switched off his phone and went into hiding.

During police investigGokwat said Adams confessed that he converted the money to his personal use.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of the Section 174 of the Plateau Penal Code Law.

The Magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced Adams, following his guilty plea.

Bokkos in her judgment, however, gave the convict an option to pay N50,000 as fine.

She also ordered the convict to N240,000 as compensation to the complainant.
